Our mission is to protect and advance the interests of all dogs and to encourage sportsmanlike competition at all dog show events.
The Garden City Kansas Kennel Club is an organization for purebred dog owners and breeders. While focusing on the local community, the club is also associated with the American Kennel Club, bringing a nationwide family of dog lovers to our own backyards.
Garden City Kennel Club President, Amanda Shaw is being presented with a plaque by Game Warden Coleman to show appreciation for their monetary donation to purchase K9 Riggs in 2021. Game Warden Coleman and KDWP want to extend their gratitude to Garden City Kennel Club for their continued support to KDWP and the K9 unit.
The Garden City Kansas Kennel Club donated a K9 officer to Kansas Game Warden Sean Coleman and the State of Kansas. In October 2020, Officer Coleman was selected to receive a K9 partner for the Kansas Fish and Wildlife officers. The search for a good candidate began immediately and a young, newly-trained K9 was found in South Carolina. Only nine months old, this candidate was tested by a South Carolina Game Warden and was quickly chosen to be Coleman's partner as a Kansas GW K9.
The GCKKC invited Officer Coleman to the December 2020 monthly meeting where he presented what the job a K9 officer and his partner entails. Handlers and their K9s cover several counties and assist over the entire state as needed. They are also called in by law enforcement offices for assistance in various searches and cases. K9 officers serve approximately eight to nine years, and the costs to maintain health and training can be hefty, not to mention the costs of obtaining a K9.
The presentation and Coleman's passion and excitement spurred the GCKKC to sponsor this new partnership. Covering all costs, GCKKC donated this new officer, K9 Riggs, and has pledged to sponsor any future, uncovered expenses.
K9 Riggs came home to Kansas in January 2021 and began the job of settling in and working on basic training. Coleman and Riggs attended a 9 week training course in Indiana beginning in February 2021.
The Garden City Kansas Kennel Club is proud to help Coleman and K9 Riggs begin and continue this amazing new adventure.
Ron and Ramona Haney helped make GCKKC what it is today.
During the process of becoming AKC affiliated the original club, Wagon Wheel Kennel Club, was renamed to the Garden City Kansas Kennel Club.
Ramona created a new logo, maintaining the wagon wheel element as a nod to the club's origins. She also wrote the club constitution and bylaws after working with other Kansas AKC Clubs and reviewing their constitution and bylaws. Her effort paid off and the club received AKC approval.
Ron was the club president for many years and served as show chairman for more than 20 years, while remaining active in the club in various ways.
Ramona held multiple positions through the years, including: corresponding secretary, treasurer, show chair and hospitality chair.
The first shows had about 1500 entries and the club served as a lifelong devotion for Ron and Ramona.
The Haneys remain the only original members who are still active in the club.
